Happy Friday Lady Code! Today, I am so excited to introduce you to my older sister, Melissa Opie. Melissa is a Holistic Health and Life Coach, and she is sharing a few health and wellness tips with Lady Code. Meet Melissa: Melissa received her training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where she was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. Drawing on this knowledge, she will help you create a completely personalized “roadmap to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.

Tell us about your work: My life’s purpose is to serve profoundly through the art of coaching. Did you know that 90% of Americans would rather die than change the way they live, even when they know the way they live is killing them? That breaks my heart. And I aim to change that, one brave soul at a time. My passion is in empowering my clients to overcome what keeps them stuck so that they accomplish amazing things in their lives. Information is everywhere. But all the information in the world can’t change how a person feels about themselves. My goal is the person’s transformation, the actual application of the information.
When did you realize that you wanted to become a transformational and empowerment coach? I went through a dark night of the soul, a time when I couldn’t make decisions, I couldn’t eat the right things, and I was afraid, stuck, and frustrated. I was the queen of self-sabotage. Woohoo. Amidst the endless search for that thing to make me happy, I lost touch with who I really was. After what seemed like the millionth dark day, I reached a breaking point. I hired my first coach. I was really scared, but I was way more scared of the crappy life that I was letting myself live. Something HAD to change ASAP!
Well, my coach kicked my butt and my life has never been the same. Because of this, I can’t let people stay stuck. I know that it’s hard to face life sometimes. I totally get it. But when you take that bold step toward owning your life, you will feel exhilaration like you are sky-diving. (I imagine that’s what sky-diving feels like!;)) Your life is too precious. You deserve to THRIVE.
What challenges did you face on the way to your current success? Being extremely shy!
What is the most important mistake you ever made and learned from? Girl, there ARE no mistakes! You know it’s true. We’ve all done things that we aren’t too proud of. I’ve certainly done my share. The most important one for me was living in the past. You know, the should’ve, could’ve, blame, shame, and regret. That’s where you will feel the most dead. If you are living in that world, I’m sorry but you are digging your own grave. Do whatever it takes to GET OUT! NOW! And yes, I do have very effective tools to help you with that, and I know for a fact that they work.
Tell me more about holistic healing and why you think that there isn’t a perfect diet that works for everyone: Why address one part of your body and ignore the rest? I practice a holistic approach to health and wellness, because I believe it is most ideal for creating optimum health. Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising? When I work with someone, we look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole. My approach is not to dwell on calories, carbs, fats, and proteins. It is not to create lists of restrictions or good and bad foods. Instead, I work with my clients to create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible, fun and rewarding. One person’s food is another person’s poison, and that’s why fad diets tend to fail in the long run. As we work together, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of the food and lifestyle choices that work best for you and implement lasting changes that will improve your energy, balance and health.
Do you have any advice for those who are struggling to meet their goals? Get yourself a coach, woman! First off, there are so many reasons that people hold themselves back. Most don’t even realize that they are stopping themselves. It seems like fear is the main culprit. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being uncomfortable, fear of spending money, fear of themselves and their own power, fear of what others will think, fear of being bored, etc. But fear is not necessarily the enemy. We must find a way to use that fear to propel us into taking action and not let it paralyze us. As Mastin Kipp, founder of The Daily Love, poetically stated, “The only difference between anxiety and exhilaration is intention.” And intention comes before action.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? I see myself having taken my coaching practice to the next level. My desire is to serve, serve, serve my clients so profoundly that their lives are deliciously amazing and being lived on purpose. I want to restore empowerment and balance to each one of us.
Who is your role model and why? Anyone who honestly looks at themselves, looks at their fears and their obstacles, and unapologetically chooses to overcome them to make their dreams come true. I’m inspired by the courageous people who get uncomfortable, who own their failures and mistakes. And I’m completely in awe of those who take personal responsibility for their lives, to make it their own, and make it go right.
