One on One With Amanda Del Duca: Founder of Slasher Girl

Anyone who spends any time shopping online, exploring blogs, or scrolling through Instagram regularly has heard of Sofia Amoruso’s book, #GirlBoss. Tell us about your career:

I started as a fashion writer in Miami after I graduated from University of Florida in 2005. From there I started assistant styling and then I started a personal style blog to get experience with online publishing and just beginning to learn the nature of social media. It felt natural to practice on myself and I started to really enjoy the process of putting together a photo series from start to finish. From my my work on my blog, I was able to start doing some of my own styling work locally and a bit for friends in New York. Eventually, I was doing creative direction work for an online retailer until I decided to start Slasher Girl, which would bring all my passions into one job.

Describe a Slasher Girl:

A Slasher Girl is someone with multiple careers. Like myself, a stylist / blogger / creative director, and now / founder.  Really at the core though, a Slasher Girl is someone who is passionate about their dreams and works hard to make them a reality. We have a #SlasherGirl motto: Create yourself.

When did you realize that you wanted to open up your own online retail boutique?

I’ve wanted to have a retail store for ages – I honestly just didn’t think it would happen so soon. I still can’t believe it.

What challenges did you face on the way to your current success?

So many every day! I would say being able to transition between a business and creative mindset has been my daily challenge.

What is the most important mistake you ever made and learned from?

Not trusting my instincts. I’ve learned that I must trust myself and lean into the choices I make without guilt or hesitation.

What would you say to an individual who is on the line about starting their own business?

Try hard every day…and go for it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

Slasher Guy – maybe a flagship store.

Who is your role model and why?

I have so many! Currently I’m looking up to Sheryl Sandberg, Rihanna, Kelly Davies Green and Cassandra Kellogg.

Anything else you would like to share with Lady Code and its readers?

Create yourself! #SlasherGirl
