Sephora VIB Rouge Review

Amidst my holiday shopping last December, I was surprised at the checkout counter when I was notified that I just acquired VIB Rouge status at Sephora! This was an exciting moment for me because the sales woman was explaining to me all of the wonderful perks that come along with the Rouge Status, but I was thinking, “I spend HOW MUCH at Sephora!?” as she handed me my new shiny red card.

VIB Rouge is the top-tier status for Beauty Insiders that spend over $1,000 at Sephora in a calendar year. Yes, I have a serious beauty addiction (let’s not get started on my MAC bill), but I’m happy that Sephora keeps track of my loyalty and is willing to reward me for my purchases. Since I spend a boat-load of money on beauty products anyway, I didn’t have any expectations getting this reward status and it has made me very happy with the perks!

After being a VIB Rouge member for about 10 months, I think I can write an honest review of my experience being a Rouge member.

Perk #1: Welcome Gift

Be ready for a lot of red lipstick samples.

Your VIB Rouge welcome gift is a small box with your new VIB Rouge card and a deluxe sample of Bite for VIB Rouge Luminous Creme Lipstick. This was a little bit disappointing because I am not a big fan of lipstick, and I’m definitely not a fan of red lipstick. I haven’t touched the lipstick and it’s still sitting in my makeup case untouched.

I re-qualified for VIB Rouge in April, and the welcome gift was very similar, but this time they gave you the option of a Marc Jacobs red lipstick or the Bite lipstick. I didn’t have a preference since I don’t ever wear red lipstick but I chose the Marc Jacobs because I already have the Bite.

Unless you are a huge red lipstick fan, there’s nothing very exciting about the welcome kit.

Perk # 2: VIB Rouge-Only Events

Okay, this is one of my favorite perks. This year Sephora has held two Beauty Before Brunch events that are exclusive to VIB Rouge members. They are held 3-4 times a year in Sephora stores from 9am-11am, and you can enjoy coffee, juice, and pastries while you shop. They have plenty of staff available for makeovers and to assist you in your shopping. The best thing about these events is that you get 4x points for your purchases, and you get an amazing bag of deluxe samples. My sample bag had a night mask from Korres, lip gloss from Dior, hand lotion from L’Occitane, nail polish from Formula X, primer from Benefit, and a mini Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, all packed inside a cute travel size cosmetics bag.

If you have something to purchase, these events are totally worth it because you get 4x points and great deluxe samples!

Perk #3: Free Makeovers

When I first became a Rouge member, this was one perk I was the least excited about. I really didn’t care for free makeovers, especially since I’m picky with my makeup and I’m a germophobe. Boy, has this perk come in handy. There have been times where I am just not in the mood to get ready for a photo shoot, a night out, or a special event, and all I have to do is pop into a Sephora to get my makeup done.

I travel very often and there are times where I have to go straight from the airport to an event. Lately I’ve been stopping by Sephora stores at my destination to get my makeup freshened up before my events or photo shoots! I’ve also learned new tips and tricks from the makeup artists, and sometimes, I’ll find a new product through the makeover that I absolutely love and have to add to my makeup bag.

Perk #4: Free Flash Shipping

This perk is a curse and a blessing. I think that I’ve spent so much more on Sephora products knowing that shipping is free, not to mention their irresistible online-exclusive offers. It’s one of my most-used Rouge perk and I really enjoy getting free 2 day shipping on all of my beauty products! Their online offers are just awesome and I’ve gotten so many gift bags, deluxe samples, and free subscriptions to Cosmo, Vogue, and ELLE thanks to their online offers. I think that if I didn’t get free shipping, I would be going to Sephora stores a whole lot more to save the cash. If you are a Flash member, you also get a special overnight shipping rate of $5.95 in case you need it sooner 🙂

Perk #5: Special Gifts

This is the biggest disappointment in VIB Rouge. They advertise special gifts and surprise/bonus samples with purchases, and I have only experienced this once during my entire membership. I probably shop at Sephora at least once every two weeks, and to have experienced this perk only once is disappointing. Since my main Sephora location is in Miami, and I usually only shop online or in major cities like Los Angeles and New York, they may be serving such high volumes that they just don’t care to take the time to provide these special gifts. The one time I did get a bonus gift was at a Sephora inside JC Penney in Rochester, New York (the middle of nowhere). I hope that Sephora will consider showing a little more appreciation for those of us that spend so much at their stores!

Other perks:

  1. Bonus eyeliner in your NARS birthday kit
  2. Access to your own beauty concierge for advice
  3. Access to shop new items exclusively online before they are released in stores

Overall, I am pretty pleased with the VIB Rouge experience, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to spend $1,000 for the status. Since I just always happen to qualify for VIB Rouge, it’s a nice and convenient program that compliments my beauty addiction. It’s definitely not worth $1,000 but since I spent that anyway, I think it’s a nice reward.

  1. I’m with you! I qualified for VIB Rouge in December and I have yet to see any perks. They don’t even do the red card anymore! All the exclusive deals are available to VIB insiders, so what’s the point really? I bought the flash shipping before I qualified, so that wasn’t a perk. I’ll continue to shop there, but I’m not going out of my way to reach the magic $1000 number.
