Glamour Top 10 College Women Event in NYC

Dear Lady Code readers,

Hope you are having a great Saturday! This week, I wanted to share with you what went down at the ‘Glamour Top 10 College Women’ event that I attended in New York City.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the award, Glamour Magazine selects 10 college women each year as finalists for the ‘Glamour Top 10 College Women’ award. The finalists represent young, inspiring women who have achieved incredible accomplishments while still at college. This year, the finalists include an Olympian, a photographer who shot Beyonce’s album cover, a White House intern and the mission director of Time Capsule to Mars.

Whoa. This makes me wonder what I was doing in college because I was clearly doing something wrong…

Each finalist received an award of $3,000 and the grand prize winner took away an additional $20,000. While it was a difficult decision, according to the legendary Editor-In-Chief of Glamour Magazine, Cindi Leive, the board finally selected Kendall Ciesemier as the grand prize winner. Kendall matriculates at Georgetown University and is the founder of Kids Caring 4 Kids. Since 2004, Kendall has raised a total of $1 million dollars to build schools, clinics, and housing in sub-Saharan Africa. She also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show with none other than President Bill Clinton. Casual.

As if getting to know these women wasn’t a night well spent, Cindi also hosted a ‘How To Get Your Dream Job’ panel featuring Danielle Brooks from Orange Is The New Black, Greta Gerwig who will be writing and starring in How I Met Your Dad, Gina Keatley the host of Healthy Soul With Gina Keatley, Dyllan McGee who is the executive producer of MAKERS and Colleen McGuinness who is a writer for Emmy Award winning 30 Rock.

My takeaways from the panel are the following: Follow the voice that’s encouraging you to push farther, don’t be afraid to go for something because you think you are unqualified for it and don’t give up when you face challenges along the way. These women are proof that you can do anything you set your mind to. As one of my favorite quotes go ‘Aim for the moon and if you miss you will still be among the stars.”

It was definitely an incredible experience to get to know these women and I hope that you are feeling inspired to go after your dreams too! I know that all of us here at Lady Code are. Speaking of Lady Code, two young women came up to me at the panel to say hello and that they are avid readers of Lady Code, which made my night. It is so nice to get to know all of you readers as you each have such unique stories and I look forward to meeting each and every one of you in the future. Thank you for being such great supporters of our platform and we are thrilled to be part of your journey to greatness.
