I’ve never been fond of Manhattan and it’s uppity,Upper East Side atmosphere. My first time in NYC, I was on a high school field trip during my most rebellious phase at 16 years old. I decided that Times Square was too boring for me, so I decided to sneak off and hang out with my sister who was living in Queens at the time. Of course I got caught and faced expulsion when I got back to my high school. It was worth it for me though. I got to see New York. My sister and her boyfriend took me around some more authentic New York neighborhoods: St. Mark’s Place, Flushing, and the recently demolished 5 Pointz.I loved that gritty, raw vibe of this New York. I couldn’t care less for Fifth Avenue…I mean, who gets inspired by a 7 story, polished Louis Vuitton store? No thanks, I’d rather be hunting down street art in Brooklyn.
Since I’ve been spending most of my time in New York City lately, I’ve learned to love the whole city. Sometimes I am in that fancy mood for brunch at Bergdorf’s on 5th Ave. Other days, I want to hunt for the craziest accessories on St. Mark’s. I just love that everything I am in the mood for is only a few train stops away in New York City.
