Jillian’s Story:
How old were you when you started getting bullied? 7th grade – 12 years old
What did you go through regarding bullies? Started by me making a decision to tell on a kid who tried to sell me cocaine, and then from there it progressed into just anything and everything about myself
How did you first react to bullying? I left that particular school and went to a new one
How did you overcome bullying? Music
You are so talented! What got you into music? My parents. My mom specifically.
We are extremely inspired by your strength and perseverance. What kept you so strong when you were dealing with bullies? Once again, music. It was the only thing in my life that made sense
Lady Code is passionate about ending bullying. Is there any advice you would like to give to someone who may be going through bullying at school? You’ve got to find whatever it is that you know you need in your life more than the air you breathe and cling to it, like I did with music. Allow it to be the light that lifts you out of the dark.
Name one mistake you have made on the way to your current success that you have learned from: I struggled with self image issues which lead to my bulimia. It broke me down a lot and made me very sick, but what I learned is that you must break away from the image in the mirror and focus on what’s inside of you.
In the next five years, where do you hope to see yourself?
Touring around the world and bringing a positive message to our youth.
Who are your inspirations and why?
Johnny Cash was one of the first artists that I listened to and his passion when he sang and the way he told a story with his music just inspired me with my writing.
And then there’s Ed Sheeran who’s lyrics have spoken to me and gotten me through a lot in the past 8 months.
If you could tell us three interesting things about yourself, what would they be?
I can say the 50 states in alphabetical order in 17 seconds.
I have a pet snake!
I like to talk to random people and compliment them.
